In 1977 Ms. Iqbal Saran was left with the decision to go into the working field after her husband passed away and she was left with raising two children on her own, a daughter 5 Rita and a son Perry 3 years of age. Ms. Saran started working for Richard J Nichol, founder of North Mitchell Lumber Co. One of her first job duties was to run the shake machine. As the company grew over the years and relocated Ms. Saran was promoted to lift truck and then yard supervisor, along the way learning and teaching everything from saw filing to grading of lumber to her son. Company expanded from 4 employees to 30 in 5 years and eventually to over 125 employees.
In 1989 North Mitchell's company founder was looking to retire, which left Ms. Saran to make another decision that she would either go work in another field or go into business for herself in the lumber industry. With the help of North Mitchell lumber Co., she began to build from scratch where the current location of the plant is today. In the office was her daughter Rita who managed the paperwork/accounting while Ms. Saran managed the plant and Mr. Nichol handled sales and purchases. In 1992 Perry Saran joined the team full time from part time as yard manager for Saran Cedar and soon after held dual positions of purchasing/sales manager for North Mitchell Lumber Co., which had become the marketing arm of Saran Cedar. In 2010 Iqbal was looking to retire and Perry purchased ownership of both Saran Cedar and North Mitchell lumber Co. and as a strategic plan amalgamated the two companies and today it is run under the North Mitchell Lumber Co. name. This family run business was established in 1971 and is Proudly Canadian!
