About
In 1974, Wynn Walker built a mill along the beautiful Fraser River, in Ruskin, B.C. Little did he know that this would be the beginning of a union of three mills – into what is now known today as the Waldun Group. Today, Waldun Forest Products is one of the largest mills in the shake and shingle industry. Our focus is to manufacture shakes and shingles from end pieces that would otherwise be wasted in the lumber-making process at Twin Rivers, as well as from blocks removed from fallen trees in the forests.
Waldun Forest Products is a proud member of the Cedar Shake and Shingle Bureau. For Waldun Forest Products to continue to lead the industry in quality, service, and affordability, we maintain a stringent quality program. Our four supervisors have over 100 years of experience combined. They strive every day to continue delivering the consistency our group demands. Unlike some mills, which sacrifice quality for affordability, Waldun places quality and value paramount. Because our employees take pride in their craftsmanship, they are concerned that every item be on-grade. With quality being so vital to us, we don’t just wait for visits from independent outside inspectors. Our in-house inspectors are constantly examining both products and process to guarantee that you get the most for your money. After all, you are our most important inspector.
Working as one to serve you better.
For Waldun to ensure our product is consistently the highest quality in the industry, we utilize the industry’s most thorough quality control measures. Waldun is the only mill with two independent inspection firms continually checking our products to ensure they are of the highest quality. Many firms do not have any inspection firms and we encourage buyers to beware of these manufacturers. The most obvious reason that other manufacturers do not have independent inspection agencies is because they make off-grade product. We care about you, the customer, and because of this we welcome inspectors to accompany our own quality control team to make sure we continue to produce the highest quality product possible. The Waldun Group and the select distributors of our products share a common commitment to quality products and quality service. We believe that our distributors are without peer in our industry. Stave Lake sidewall shingles are only produced from shingles produced by members of the Cedar Shake and Cedar Bureau. Only when you start with quality can you get the quality we strive for. Can your current supplier make the same claim?
Environmental mission and strategy (ESG)
Environmental Benefits
Out of all the different building materials, wood is the most energy conserving and is the only material that is 100% reusable, recyclable, biodegradable, and renewable. Steel, aluminum, plastic, and concrete are frequently thought of as wood substitutes. It is often incorrectly assumed that using these products will help protect our forests. However, we cannot grow more iron ore to make steel, bauxite to make aluminum, petroleum to make plastic, or limestone to make concrete. These materials are mined or extracted from the earth, never to be replaced again. Even recycled wood substitutes contain large percentages of virgin, nonrenewable materials.
A Renewable Resource
Every time we use a product from a nonrenewable resource, we are diminishing the earth’s ability to sustain us. Wood roofing and siding, however, is made from a resource that can be planted, harvested, and planted again and again. Wood is the choice for a sustainable future. Mills that manufacture cedar shakes and shingles contribute to the replanting and maintaining of our natural resources. The province of B.C. has some of the highest standards and toughest regulations in the harvesting of Western Red Cedar.
