About
It all started with a family and a dream.
In 1956, the Clayton family began its journey when founder Jim Clayton sold his first home and launched the dream of making homeownership attainable for everyone across America. We’ve come a long way over the last 60 years. Our CEO since 1999, Kevin Clayton joined his father’s family business at the age of 7. After graduating from college and earning his MBA from the University of Tennessee, Kevin gained valuable experience at several other highly successful companies before returning to Clayton, where he has promoted a servant leadership style to guide various company initiatives over the years. Kevin has continued his family’s commitment to providing quality, attainable housing, while constantly improving the experience for both Clayton team members and customers. Clayton is now one of the nation’s leading homebuilders in site-built and off-site built homes.
What began as just one location has grown to over 350 home centers offering a variety of housing options to fit families’ needs. Clayton now builds and sells traditional site-built homes and off-site built homes – including manufactured homes, modular homes, CrossMod™ homes, Designer Cottages and PMRVs.
Opening doors to a better life.
Our passion is about more than just building homes — it’s about making the world a better place for our customers, communities and future generations. Guided by Kevin’s vision of driving innovation, improving lives, fostering inclusion and giving back to the communities where we live and work, our more than 20,000 team members are united around a common goal: to make the dream of homeownership possible for more families.
Built on a strong foundation, to last a lifetime or two.
Our advanced construction process has been carefully engineered to give you a strong, beautiful home from the foundation to the roof, and everything in between. When it comes to getting the job done right, there are no shortcuts. Over the last 60 years, we’ve done more than build homes. We’ve transformed how they’re built in the first place, from our innovative off-site building process to the quality construction materials we use.
The Clayton Built® Standard
When you buy a Clayton Built® home, you can trust it’s constructed on a foundation of strength, quality and durability that has truly been built to last.
Every Clayton Built® home goes through a series of rigorous checkpoints and internal inspections that test electrical outlets, exterior quality, plumbing lines, interior details and more, so you know you can rely on each part of your home, from the inside out.
Our manufactured homes are built to federal HUD code requirements and our modular homes are built to state and local building requirements. This includes specific construction and design elements depending on the wind and thermal zone where the home will be located.
We build with sustainability in mind.
At both our home office and our home building facilities, we are always seeking out innovative ways to conserve energy, water and other resources. Whether it’s through making our building process more efficient or the smart home features we offer our customers, these efforts demonstrate we are committed to environmental stewardship.

The Way We Build
Resource Management
Because we construct homes at scale inside of our building facilities, we can order many materials in bulk, such as lumber, siding, and sheetrock. This allows us to reduce packaging waste and establish recycling partnerships with our vendors, both of which help to save on costs and make our homes more attainable.
Renewable Energy
Clayton is expanding its use of renewable energy in its operations. In 2023, Clayton will install several solar systems at home building facilities in east Tennessee and at Clayton’s home office. As we reduce emissions in our operations, we will continuously look to incorporate more renewable energy solutions including fleet modernization.
