Do I need ceiling fans if I have an HRV?
I have high ceilings and I will be adding an addition this summer with normal height ceilings and a new stairwell to the basement. Should I arrange for a ceiling fan in the older part with high ceilings or will it be redundant with HRV connected throughout?
If it were me I'd want a ceiling fan in the older portion of the home as well, certainly if it can be done during other renovations without great effort. An HRV does not provide the same amount of circulation as a ceiling fan does, and without one, warm air will still collect up high; and in the summer a ceiling fan is a quiet and efficient way to provide a cooling sensation. Here is a short video on ceiling fans, they are an integral part of the heating and cooling strategy of our Edelweiss demonstration house.
