What is the best way to do wall construction using Charred Cedar Siding?
I had a small project building a garage with charred cedar siding and it is for experimenting of using charred cedar. I'm interested to know the wall construction with this material for creating good insulation and modern look.
Charred wood or carbonized wood siding, also known as Shou Sugi Ban, is a a matter of slightly charring the outside surface of the wood. See our page here that explains better
Shou sugi Ban carbonized wood siding
There is no specific wall assembly that is necessary for installing Shou Sugi ban wood, it behaves just as other forms of exterior cladding. So what is important is that you don’t fall into some of the easy traps that a lot of builders seem to do, that leads to an unnecessarily shortened lifespan of siding, which can also cause interior wall damage.
Exterior siding is basically a rain screen, and it protects the interior surfaces (like your home wrap weather barrier from UV rays. The most common mistake with siding installation is preventing air flow and having a proper drainage plane where any moisture that does make it in can safely be drained out.
Depending on the style of siding - which can be vertical like board and batten, or horizontal like clapboard siding – sometimes the strapping (or furring strips) are poorly installed. Make sure water can drain out the bottom, and allow air to flow freely up from the bottom and out the top. Here is a page that will help you design it on How to Install Siding so Walls Can Dry.
Is there an issue with a low SRI value on Shou Sugi Ban?
