The way we attached mineral wool insulation on the LEED Platinum Edelweiss House worked well, but was pretty labour intensive. There are a few options for attaching rigid insulation to the exterior of houses, one would be using fiberglass clips, another could be using the Larsen Truss Wall System. Either of those can be used to secure many varieties of insulation to the exterior of a wall assembly.
Probably the easiest and most affordable method would be ThermalWall rigid foam insulation panels ThermalWall is an EPS rigid foam panel with a metal rail embedded in the middle of the panel allowing it to be attached to the exterior of sheathing using only short screws. That can save a lot of money since once you hit about 6 inches and a thicker diameter, screw prices go through the roof. This also breaks the thermal bridge to prevent heat loss, which was the reasoning behind how we installed the exterior rigid insulation on the Edelweiss House.
