How much does it cost to build an Earthship?
My partner and I want to build, live in, and potentially even rent out, an Earthship; a type of passive solar earth shelter that is made of both natural and upcycled materials.
My question is where do we start? Who do we ask? Who do we hire? How much money do we need? Any ideas or brainstorms are welcome.
An Earthship is not an affordable home to build, nor is it a sensible, comfortable or durable one. They’re a bit of a gimmick that sort of made themselves obsolete by not adapting over the last several decades, along with adhering pretty strictly to design components that are more about brand recognition rather than high performance housing. Here we have an in-depth look at the Earthship, and if you let it sink in you will realize there is much about them that makes no sense whatsoever. I would suggest you start with a quick read to see if you really want to go through with it.
Do Earthships work in cold climates?
If your hope is to build an off-grid, passively heated home, we have lots of pages that will help you design properly for whatever climate your building in. Below are a few starter pages. Sorry to burst your bubble, but I would rather give you the straight info now rather than see you drop your life savings on something that doesn’t work they way it claims.
