How do you lower winter indoor humidity in a home in Guelph, ON?
Our winter house humidity here in Guelph, ON is between 30 - 40 % RH. We have awhole house dehumidifier. in 2020 we had new doors installed. When it hits -10 or colder the doors get ice buildupon the outer edges aand can freeze shut. Why? and what more can we do to lower humidity?
That is odd, since your humidity isn’t all that high ‘relatively’ speaking. Houses in cold climates should maintain indoor Relative Humidity levels of around 30-40% in general, that's a good level for the house but also good for occupants. If you go much below 30%RH you will likely start to get chapped lips and nose bleeds so I'm not sure what is going on honestly, are you sure your hygrometer is giving you an accurate reading? That sounds like a problem you’d experience if it was 60-70% RH, I just find it a bit surprising around 30% RH. So I suspect either the hydrometer (easily checked by buying a new one for 20 bucks or so), and if not then maybe something with the door itself. What about the door is freezing, is it the seals? Could it have been installed poorly? Do you see light coming through at all?
