What is the best non toxic insulation for a house?
My beloved builder recommends spray foam insulation. I do not want a toxic household. We are building on an island in Florida and the house is 12 feet off the ground. What materials can we use to insulate the ceilings and air spaces? Additionally, what eco-friendly and human-friendly products are out there for wall insulation? Thank you
There are a lot of natural insulation choices that will not off gas toxic chemicals into your home, here is a page all about it –
What is the best insulation for a home?
There are now new blowing agents for spray foam that are climate friendly and said to be much less toxic, but since you say you are looking for eco-friendly building products then I don’t think spray foam will be a choice you are happy with. Outside of the less harmful blowing agents, there is still the reality that any material that spray foam is applied to is no longer recyclable at the end of its life. All the wood framing in your walls that could be re-used in the future will be heading straight to a land fill once it has spray foam adhered to it as it is very difficult (and hardly cost effective) to remove.
One of the more durable and non toxic insulation materials you can work with would be Rockwool mineral wool insulation, it is made with recyled stone dust so it is natural and non-toxic, it is also very durable because it is not harmed by moisture.
