Which is better, cellulose or loose-fill fiberglass insulation?
I have a 100-year-old Arts & Crafts home in North Texas. At some point in the past there was some kind of insulation blown in the walls, evidenced by the plugged holes in the wood siding between each set of studs. All I know is about it is that it was done at least 15 years ago. Now that I am looking to add or replace insulation, in my research I saw on your site that cellulose is preferred over foam (which makes sense). Then further research indicated the chemicals used for fire and insect repellant in cellulose wear off after about 5 years and then it become more of an attractant to both. Is that accurate? Much of that information came from a company that uses the new fiberglass blown insulation (CertainTeed) that seems to have different properties than the older kinds. Can you tell me whether or not the new kind of blown-in fiberglass is preferrable to the cellulose? Since it does not stick to the studs I don't see that it would be any less green than fiberglass batt. I would like to go as green as I can but also want to make the best decision for the home. Also, should I have whatever remains of the old insulation removed?
