Passivhaus Certified Windows in Charlevoix

House Construction Exteriors, Quebec City - Levis

Nowadays, sustainable construction is no longer just a trend; It is a key vector in our collective efforts to preserve the environment. Passivhaus certification is a guarantee of quality and energy efficiency. It ensures that the buildings are not only comfortable and economical, but also environmentally friendly.

Passivhaus certification is a rigorous international standard that guarantees exceptional energy performance. To obtain this certification, a building must meet strict criteria for insulation, airtightness and indoor air quality. In cold climates, such as Charlevoix, these requirements are even more crucial to ensure comfort and reduce energy consumption.

The Charlevoix Project: A Commitment to the Environment

Nestled in the beautiful Charlevoix region, this project under construction goes beyond just a house; It embodies a real manifesto in favor of eco-responsibility.

Designed with a deep commitment to the environment, this exemplary building strives to reduce its carbon footprint while providing exceptional comfort to its future residents. Although it has not yet obtained its certification, the steps to acquire it are already underway.

Large-scale challenges

Obtaining Passivhaus certification in a climate as harsh as that of Charlevoix is no easy feat.

This project presented several unique challenges:

  1. Non-passive design : The house, with its highly glazed design, had to maintain its aesthetics while meeting Passivhaus’ strict standards. Without a very close collaboration on our part with the architect, the consultant and the general contractor, the solutions found would probably never have seen the light of day.
  2. Extremely Cold Climate : Charlevoix is known for its harsh winters, being located in a climate zone classified as “cold” according to the PassivHaus institute. With the required performance exceeding that of our current product, the project encouraged us to redefine our goals and design a better insulated window, allowing it to progress towards certification. NZP became the only manufacturer in Quebec to obtain this certification. Only 13 manufacturers in the world have achieved this standard.
  3. Innovative Solutions : To overcome these obstacles, we have added insulation cavities inside the frames, which helps improve energy efficiency and reduce heat loss. In addition, we have opted for a more efficient 52 mm glass, offering better acoustic and thermal insulation, thus guaranteeing optimal comfort in the interior spaces. These technical choices are intended to ensure durability and increased performance.

These modifications have not only allowed us to meet the customer’s expectations but also to show that it is possible to combine aesthetics and energy performance.

Innovation for sustainability

This project in Charlevoix is much more than a construction project; It’s a demonstration of what innovation and sustainability can accomplish together. By overcoming the challenges imposed by the climate and the demands of design, we have participated in the creation of a building that is not only an example to follow but also a source of inspiration for all construction professionals.

Obtaining the Passivhaus Cold Climate certification confirms that even the most ambitious projects can be implemented sustainably. If you aspire to integrate eco-responsible practices into your projects, this model is to follow. Join us in this journey and let’s take a step towards a greener future together.
